Welcome to Infomate, the unique site where you control the content. Forget heavy-handed administrators and over-zealous moderators. Here, you decide what goes and what stays. This is your community and your site, where the power lies in your hands.
Infomate is a self-regulatory, information sharing community. Our concepts are based on openness, relevancy and promoting equal rights for all members of community.

moderation.png

There are many news portals, forums and sites available online allowing users to share information. These sites are regulated by administrators, who have the power to delete posts and suspend users as they see fit. The problem is, many administrators do not use their power correctly. Some may suspend members just because they don’t agree with what they say or stand for, rather than for any legitimate reason. Perhaps you have been unlucky enough to be banned from a web resource by an unfair administrator. You will have tried out other similar sites, and perhaps come across more of the same. We want to change that, and give the power back to the users. You are, after all, the ones that make the sites successful. At Infomate, we completely reject the idea of external administration and transfer full control over the whole website to users themselves.
In an attempt to realise this ambitious idea, we have created a specialised voting system for all content, including stories, comments, tags and users. The decisions made on this site rely upon or are the result of votes cast by people who actually use the site.
You can vote for a story and rate your feelings about it, and based on the collective thoughts of our society, the good stories almost always make it to the top. The same goes for comments. You can set your own rating threshold, which means any comments with a score below your threshold are shown collapsed to you. You can adjust this threshold from your Account Settings. Every user has a score, which reflects the user’s popularity and standing within the society.

If you really like or dislike some users, you can add them as your friends or foes. All stories created and comments posted by your foes will be less visible to you. On the other hand, we have created a friends view that lets you see the information posted on this site through your friends’ perspective. Adding someone as a friend or foe also affects their rating, so users with many foes will generally have a low rating among the community.

However, to prevent malicious users from posting illegal content, the society needs a way to control the information. Infomate provides this with the help of certain democratic processes. We believe this is what sets us apart from other information-based websites. There are no super administrators. And even though there are moderators, their role is different from what you might expect. Normally every inferior story or comment is hidden away thanks to the users voting against them, but if this is not sufficient and the story or user needs to be deleted forever, the moderators have the power to start a moderation process.
By pressing the moderate button, the process enters stage one, where all the users, start voting for or against the content in question. If enough users vote against moderation, the content is returned to its previous state. If more people voted for moderation, it is deleted. If not enough users participate in the vote, more time is given, so that everyone has a chance to express their opinion. The number of moderators needed is calculated as a fixed percentage of the population, and the status of moderator can be achieved by having a high user score.

On top of this, at Infomate you can instantly find information relevant to you with the help of parametric information searching and sorting. You can sort content either by the date it was posted, or by its community rating, or (uniquely to us) by the rating your friends have assigned to it.
Due to the wealth and variety of information available here, we’ve introduced a few features that let users effortlessly find what they are looking for.
Firstly, there is the community tag system, which we have taken to a whole new level. Forget tag clouds that just don’t make sense. Here users can vote and change the tags of each story so that they are uniform in style and spelling. The auto-complete system further helps to support a uniform tagging system. Users with a higher score have greater impact when changing tags.
Secondly, you can choose to sort stories by their date, community or friend score. You can also choose to see only the stories that contain your favourite tags.

We hope that every user who joins our community will be able to fully express his or her views and thoughts, and will be able to learn about the views and thoughts of others. We hope that through this process of interaction we can all make Infomate an information sharing community we can all enjoy.

sounds good

i like where this is going.

although upon first going to the site, it's not clear where the stories are.

you really need some kind of "front page" and some kind of "general classifications" as much as you probably think you don't want to be like "those other guys" it would be useful to just click on the top 50 stories like you do on, say, reddit. or just look at some tech stories really quick.

we all know that tags are great, but that people are often way too lazy to adequately tag stories, and everyone has a different idea of what the tags should even be.

i just searched on "fun" and got no responses, and "technology" only one.

i guess this is pretty new, but i think you can see the issue here.

please feel free to drop me a line if you want to discuss this further. lord knows i helped Mixx out a shitload when they were adding new features and still do. so i'm sure i can give you some advice or suggestions, if you are interested.

Thank you

Thank you very much for your comment.
At first there wasn't much content, so that's why the front page was empty.
Thanks for the "General classifications" idea. We were thinking about that but decided that the community tags would serve the same purpose and be created by the community not by the design. What do you think about having the most popular tags at the top like on digg and reddit?
>i just searched on "fun" and got no responses, and >"technology" only one.
The search doesn't currently take tags into account. The feature is being implemented.
>so i'm sure i can give you some advice or suggestions, if >you are interested.
We definitely are :) We appreciate your advice.

ideas

well if you are gonna have tags, you need a way to access them. i don't currently see how.

i know we all hate LABELS but they are a necessary evil in a site like this. i'd keep them vague..and avoid ones that no one ever uses..

i'd just go with about 8..news, tech/sci, art, politics, other and then 3 of the most popular tags in the last (week/month/year depending on user settings).

and have the front page continue (there is no "next page" on the site now...not good, at all!) i see no reason why a user shouldn't be able to browse through every article until they get the the lowest one, do you? that is super easy to implement.

so: tag search, 9 catagories (the 1st being the "top stories of the last few days, + the 8 i mentioned)..all working the same way.

really, from a programming perspective, it's just all tagged stories...just add the category as another tag. when a story is more than a few days old, remove that "top" tag from it. done. easy. hardly any code.

plus, that way, someone can tag-search this:

enter tag> top&(techsci&(news|politics))

see that? | is OR of course...

or how about this:

enter tag> (yoda|Nash|Cembo)&(top|politics)

so basically it's all tags..the name of the submitter, the category, the top tag, oh, and i'd add one more tag: oldtop

enter tag> yoda&(oldtop|top)

that would give every top story ever by me, in a paged format.

of course, saving a list of searches for each user would sure be nice of you guys!!!!!!!!! :-D

>Labels Let's see if popular

>Labels
Let's see if popular tags will be sufficient.
>next page
There is a next page link. Try changing the sorting settings at the front page. Stories submitted := All of them, Stories that := All of them.
>search
The tag search is coming.
>of course, saving a list of searches for each user would sure be nice of you guys!!!!!!!!! :-D
Added to the proposed feature list. For now there are favorite tags.

Btw, we've just been banned

Btw, we've just been banned from mixx for contacting the members of the group "digg refugees", despite the fact that we received positive replies from them.

wtf?

what was the reason they gave you? can you forward me the email? i know those guys..i'll go to bat for you if it seems messed up. seriously. i'm one of the top users and i've had personal emails from every one of the employees and top users over the last year.

let me see it. i WILL make a BIG DEAL out of it if it seems messed up. every damn mixxer will see it, that's a million plus people.

but ARE YOU READY, can your system handle maybe 1000s of new users?

please, email me privately. Mixx has been suspected of censorship and seems to have some Zionist control behind the scenes..

you have my email address, right?

i'm NOT kidding.

Nice idea, needs work, though.

As much as I'd love a social news site that isn't masterminded by administrators who aren't even active in the community they rule, this project definitely needs work.

After poking around a little bit, here are my initial responses:

-The name
The name of the site doesn't click. It doesn't feel catchy. Having a catchy name is one of the most important parts of any successful project.

-The design
The reason I absolutely hate Reddit is because their site layout is boring. There's no Web 2.0, AJAX, HTML-magic, attention-grabbing eye candy in their design. Admittedly, the design on this site still trumps Reddit, but not by much. The articles take up too much space on a page; it almost forces you to read the entire thing, even if it's not something you're interested in. An excerpt or a thumbnail is sufficient, and saves space on the page. It just looks cleaner.

-1 or 2 votes?
I love the ability to vote on content, however I think that giving an option to give two votes is pointless. If you like the story, you vote on it. Most people are probably going to +2 just for the sake of making the number higher. This creates artificial bloat on an article's score.

I know this isn't a final version. I expect things to change pretty drastically (especially if you want to be any real competition to Digg/Reddit/Mixx/etc) before anything goes "official".

Keep up the great work, though. In all honesty, I sincerely doubt I'll be spending any real time on this site just yet, so I won't give you any BS about sticking around. If things pick up around here, I may give it some attention, though. Keep me posted. :D

>The name I agree with you

>The name

I agree with you Digg/Reddit/Mixx is more "catchy" than Infomate, however a lot of domain names are already taken. Infomate

was the best one that we could come up with. Can you suggest another name? :-)

>-The design

All articles are trimmed after 2000 characters. The problem is images and flash are not currently taken into account.

Do you think the length of trimmed posts should be decreased?

>-1 or 2 votes?

I disagree with you on this one. Sometimes you like the story and sometimes you really enjoy it. Yes, some users are likely to

abuse the option if they don't like the article's score. We hope they won't do that too often.

The site is constantly evolving and many improvements are coming. Thanks for the comment and I hope to see you soon as a frequent visitor.

I DISAGREE COMPLETELY!!

i love the layout of this site. some of the "verbage" is a bit obfuscated maybe: "Moderation Portal"?? huh???? but i like it.

don't start adding AJAX or other heavy Java(ecma!)Script or heaven forbid, Flash. Although, maybe a Java-enabled version (optional!) could be cool down the road. Don't forget that most cell phones and PDAs (eventually the bulk of your market, without any doubt) support Java...that's over a billion devices.

they added a bunch of AJAX sh!t to Yahoo Mail the other day, and it's so slow now it sucks. way slower.

[Flash is on the way out..it'll hang on awhile, but it's days are numbered. Mark my words..]

Infomate is a sweet name. It rolls off the tongue nicely, it doessnntt have any affectation, it's easy to remember, and it has a "modern, euro-feel" like Swedish furniture does, you know? It's the Ligne-Roset of Website names...i'd fully keep it. How much did you have to pay for it, a few grand? 20? if not, you scored big time.

here's an idea i just had...instead of -2,-1,0,1,2 how about a decimal slider that just goes from -1 to +1..make it nice and long..and you can really express yourself...oh, this is about a 0.45! nah, i'll go 0.62! now that would be sweet.

you can see i'm psyched on this site.

Thanks for supporting us,

Thanks for supporting us, yoda! I think we won't be adding any more AJAX features...well, in the nearest future at least.

Regarding the decimal slider, I think it would be better to leave this choice for users (when we will have more of them :)) If they want a slider we'll do the slider, if they want something like digg, we'll do it :)

Honestly, I don't have any

Honestly, I don't have any ideas for a name. But in conjunction with a name, you'd also need a logo. Sometimes the logo is what makes more of an impact than the name. Take Reddit, for instance. Their logo - the little alien - seems to be a huge part of the site design [insert Reddit design joke here].

As for as 2000 characters, that's quite a lot. Most of the social news sites limit the description to under three hundred. Two thousand is practically a short story. In a lot of cases with shorter news articles, the entire article could go in the description. Same with the large image previews. In a lot of cases, it could completely defeat the purpose of providing a link to the original story.

Like I said, though. It's just my initial responses after poking around for a while. I'll keep an eye on this place, as it obviously has potential to be something big.

We're looking for a logo -

We're looking for a logo - http://infomate.org/node/178
The teaser length is reduced to 1000 characters. We're thinking now what to do with the large image previews.
Though infomate can be used(and everyone is encouraged to do so) as a social bookmarking website its primary goal is to host original content.

umm

i'm sorry but i can't figure out where the "popular tags" are at.

and i know i've already shown a lot of moronic ignorance in this thread but where the hell are they? those seemed to be your answer for everything.

thanks.

another suggestion is that that you need to use some graphics to make some of this a little easier to understand...you know what i mean? i'm not that dumb of a person and i've used computer for very close to 30 years now (since i was 11 or 12) and this site is not that easy to navigate, i don't think. some "visual cues" could REALLY be useful.
